It was created by Karen Chau, a Chinese-American artist who drew directly from her own bicultural upbringing. The title itself is a personal touch: "Ni hao" (你好) means "Hello" in Mandarin, and "Kai-Lan" (凯兰) was the name given to Chau at birth, later anglicized to Karen.
